Giving Back to The Community and Inspiring The Next Generation Is Key

Los Angeles, March 8, 2023 - Hitachi Ltd.'s motto is "Inspire the Next," and a new video shows how the Hitachi Group of companies translates that idea into positive, community action.

In 1986, Hitachi Ltd. Los Angeles office was established to handle the public affairs and community relations in Southern California. Right away, Hitachi began giving back to their newest, local community. Over the years, the company has donated millions of dollars across the state to philanthropic causes, like the California Science Center and The Accelerated Schools Hitachi Science Room to champion and sustain the value of science and technology.

By 1995, five Hitachi Group companies, including the Hitachi L.A. office and Hitachi Astemo Americas, Inc., spearheaded the new Hitachi South California Regional Community Action Committee (SRCAC) to develop growth throughout their community. With a mission to nurture their community's next generation through fostering creativity and critical thinking, the SRCAC partnered with local schools and other groups to bring more diverse science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) learning events to local students.

The SRCAC has been enjoying partnerships with groups focused on engaging underrepresented students, including young women, minorities, and students with disabilities for years. Incorporating the value of hands-on learning, the SRCAC and their partners host programs and facilitate field trips for Southern California youth as part of the committee's ongoing journey.

"Partners, such as Hitachi, allow them [the youth] access to programs that we don't usually have in our community," Anna Araujo, Executive Director at East LA Rising, says. "The children in our community need to know that they could work at companies on the West side, such as Hitachi, and that they could fit in."

Hitachi supports, promotes, and/or participates in these programs within the community:

  • Los Angeles Department of Water & Power (LADWP)
  • Science Bowl Schools
  • Omni Nano technology workshops
  • Just hosted and celebrated the 9th annual Hitachi Celebrates Science Day
  • No Limits for Deaf Children science room and Saturday school science teacher
  • Bridge Builders summer marine science program
  • Mayor's Scholarship Fund For Women Pursuing Continued Work in the STEM Field in College
  • For 20 years, Hitachi has hosted an annual Japanese kite-building workshop for students across the greater Los Angeles area.

"These workshops are so motivational," Dr. Marco Curreli, Executive Director at Omni Nano, says. "They inspire students to consider jobs or even careers they didn't even think about before."

Hitachi's Southern California team also participates directly by volunteering for some events. The investment they feel in growing and sustaining a positive community for all is more than just financial donations. Sharanelle Clark, of Hitachi Astemos Americas, Inc. marketing department, explains it best.

"We check up on them," Clark says. "We partner with them...that's how we make those footprints that won't be erased."
